Chicago, Illinois, lawyer and United States senator, 1940-1949.
Born at West Bureau, Illinois March 8, 1897. Served in the United States Marine Corps during World War I. Studied at University of Illinois and graduated with a law degree from Northwestern University. Admitted to the bar 1926. Served as assistant state's attorney of Cook County from 1926 to 1932. Unsuccessful candidate (Republican) for governor in 1936. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1940 to fill a vacancy left by the death of James Hamilton Lewis, and re-elected in 1942. Member of Senate Appropriations Committee and chairman of the Rules and Administration Committee. After his term in office ended in 1949, he returned to private law practice in Chicago.
