Pansee Tift Benson taught school on Hemet, California ranch of Thomas Rawson (1911-1912). Rawson told Benson that Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885), author of "Ramona" (1884), had based principal characters of that novel on two Indian laborers on Rawson ranch.
