Charleston, S.C. businessman and alderman. Baptized John Linnaeus Edward Willis, as an adult did not use his first two names. The son of Anthony Gabeau Willis, Edward Willis was born in Charleston and spent his childhood and youth in Augusta, Ga. After the death of his father he came to Charleston and entered the business firm of John Fraser & Co. In 1861 he was appointed quartermaster with the rank of major, and was subsequently appointed chief purchasing agent for the Confederate government, handling all blockade goods. He was also in active military service during the war in Virginia and South Carolina. After the surrender at Appomattox he was detailed to look after the personal safety of Mrs. Jefferson Davis. After the war Willis established the factorage firm of Willis & Chisolm, and during the Spanish-American war he served as U.S. depot quartermaster at Charleston. He was active in many civic offices and organizations and was a collector of rare books.
