Charles A. Austin, of Orange, Essex County, New Jersey, was a real estate agent and financier who specialized in the purchase of land and properties in western states, particularly in North and South Dakota, Minnesota,Kansas, and Nebraska. Austin's specialty was the purchase of undeveloped tracts and small parcels which he then leased for short periods to either potential end-purchasers or developers.
